When it comes to data analysis and statistical distribution, it is very crucial for us to understand the diversity of the data in terms of the attributes of the data such as rows, columns, type of the data object, etc.

This information helps us have a better insight of the data values and the type of the object.

R provides us with various functions to understand and have insights of the data such as —

  1. attributes() function
  2. attr() function
  3. str() function

In this article, we would be primarily focusing on attributes() and attr() function in R.

The attributes() function in R programming

R provides us with attributes() function that enables us have necessary diversity information about the data objects. That is, with attributes() function, we get the following insights as result:

  • The names of the data variables i.e. data columns that hold the data values.
  • It iterates through every row and returns the row numbers as index values.
  • The data type of the data object such as data frame.

Syntax:

attributes(data object)

Example 01

rm(list = ls())
#Setting the working directory
setwd("D:/Edwisor_Project:Loan_Defaulter")
getwd()

#Load the dataset
dta = read.csv("bank-loan.csv",header=TRUE)
print('Attributes: ')
print(attributes(dta))

In the above example, we have loaded a data set into the R environment using the read.csv() function. Here, we have made use of the Bank Load Defaulter dataset. You can find the dataset here!

Further, we have listed the attributes of the dataset in terms of the rows and columns using attributes() function.

Example 02

In this example, we have created a matrix in R using matrix() function with 2 rows and 6 columns.

When we try to apply attributes() function on the created matrix, we get the attributes value in terms of the dimensions of the matrix i.e. number of rows and columns.

data = matrix(c(10,20,30,40),2,6)
print(data)
print('Attributes: ')
print(attributes(data))

Output:

> print(data)

The attr() method in R programming

As seen above, attributes() function returns all the attributes of a data frame such as column names (names), row indexes (row.names) and data type of the object (class).

But what if we require only a specific data attribute as result? Like only the names of the columns or the data type?

Here is the solution!!

R attr() function enables us to have a specific attribute explained as an output. With this function, we can get any one of the information from the set of outputs of the attributes() function.

Syntax:

attr(data object, which="specific attribute")

Here, we need to pass a specific attribute whose value we expect as the outcome of the attr() function.

Example 01

In the below example, we have loaded the dataset into the R environment. It is the same dataset that we have used in the above examples.

As an argument, we have passed ‘names’ attribute to the attr() function, Thus, as a result, it would customize the output for us i.e. it would return only the column names of the data set.

rm(list = ls())
#Setting the working directory
setwd("D:/Edwisor_Project:Loan_Defaulter")
getwd()
#Load the dataset
dta = read.csv("bank-loan.csv",header=TRUE)
print(attr(dta,which="names"))

Output:

> print(attr(dta,which="names"))
[1] "age"      "ed"       "employ"   "address"  "income"   "debtinc"  "creddebt" "othdebt"  "default"

Example 02

Now, in this example, we have created a list of data as shown below. Further, we have converted it to a data frame using as.data.frame() function.

After which, we now specify ‘row.names’ as an argument to get the row indexes as result.

rm(list = ls())
data =list(City = c("Pune ", "Satara"),id = c(1,2))
print(data)
data = as.data.frame(data)
print('Attributes: ')
attr(data,which="row.names")

Output:

> print('Attributes: ')
[1] "Attributes: "
> attr(data,which="row.names")
[1] 1 2
